Disability and Grief

Description

This one-day workshop will explore experiences of disability and grief throughout the lifespan. Losses related to diagnosis of a disability (i.e., at birth, acquired), living with a disability, and end-of-life issues will be examined. These losses will be explored in the context of family, social circles, systems, and communities. To engage in this topic, we will learn about how disability is framed in the social construction model and in critical disability studies. We will discuss relevant grief theories and how they apply to disability – physical and intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD). The workshop will include exploration of inclusion and exclusion from death-related events, and how either might affect grief, mourning, and coping. Findings from Cara’s dissertation research with people living with intellectual disabilities and their grief experiences after a death will provide context and practice ideas related to this important topic. Please prepare to participate in this course through sharing, asking questions, and engaging in small group work.
