Foundations of Therapeutic Counselling

Description

In this course, students will be introduced to various stages of the counselling process from rapport building to intervention to discharge preparation. Emphasis will be placed on person-centered approaches. Specific techniques to respond to crises will be covered, including the development of a suicide safety plan and relapse prevention plan. Ethical issues will also be explored such as transference. Students will also be introduced to group counselling and a family approach to counselling. Special consideration will be given to concepts of enabling and codependency behaviors. Addictions as a “family issue” and its relevance in the context of treatment will be explored.
