Therapeutic Recreation & Mental Health
Description
The field of mental health is currently the second greatest employer of recreation therapists. This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts of mental health and mental illness as they relate to the field of therapeutic recreation. It is important that students understand why and how individuals think, feel, and behave as they do and how this can affect their quality of life. Included must be an understanding of the factors that impact wellness which contain personal challenges, relationships, environmental stressors, and diversity needs. Students will explore a variety of mental health disorders through a process including definitions, prevalence, etiology (causes), assessments, treatment, and interventions, while gaining an understanding of the importance of recovery.
